Brussels Protest Calls for Cancellation of Israeli Conductor’s Performance
(MENAFN) Pro-Palestinian civil society and cultural organizations hold a protest Tuesday at Bozar in Brussels, calling for the cancellation of an upcoming performance by Israeli conductor Lahav Shani, scheduled for November, according to reports.
The demonstration follows an open letter signed by groups including Cadi for Palestine, the Belgian Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, and the Anti-Zionist Jewish Alliance Belgium, alongside artists, academics, and cultural workers, as reported by a media outlet.
The signatories argue that Bozar’s invitation contradicts what they describe as an “ethical duty not to remain silent” amid the ongoing humanitarian situation affecting Palestinians in Gaza, including displacement, bombardment, and destruction of civilian infrastructure.
They also claim that cultural institutions should not separate art from politics, referencing what they describe as findings by the International Court of Justice in relation to the situation in Gaza.
The groups call on Bozar to withdraw the invitation and align with what they say is a growing international cultural boycott movement targeting Israel.
Bozar expresses regret over the protest but defends its programming decisions, stressing its commitment to artistic diversity and its role as a federal cultural institution hosting international performers.
