Guadalupe’s World Cup Corridor Highlights Mobility Crisis in Monterrey

(MENAFN) In Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, large promotional boards line the streets welcoming visitors to the Corredor Mundialista (World Cup Corridor). These signs showcase the city’s “Green Corridor” initiative, designed to encourage pedestrian-friendly movement.

However, a walk through the neighborhoods near BBVA Stadium—set to host World Cup matches next year—reveals a starkly different picture. Roads are filled with potholes, pedestrian crossings remain hazardous, and infrastructure for alternative transport such as cycling is nearly absent.

The Monterrey metropolitan region is facing severe mobility problems. What began as scattered issues has grown into a full-scale crisis, now ranking as the top concern among residents in local surveys. As one of Mexico’s three host cities for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, officials are rushing to complete extensive infrastructure upgrades before the tournament.

“I think they’re making arrangements for the World Cup,” said Angel Mario Ochoa, a 66-year-old lifelong resident of Guadalupe. He told a news agency that neighbors had demanded pothole repairs for more than three years, but only recently—three months ago—did he witness work finally begin.

“We are going to fix everything to a world-class standard: streetlights, signage, sidewalks, pothole repairs, paving, security, public transport, buses, and the metro,” declared Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia during a promotional event for the Green Corridor in Guadalupe.
