Australia Hails Trump Move to Exempt Certain Food Goods from Tariffs
"We welcome the lifting of these tariffs. That's a good thing for Australian beef producers. We maintain a clear, consistent position. We do not support tariffs," Wong stated during an interview with an Australian broadcasting agency.
Canberra "believes in being able to access each other's markets. We think that's in the best interest of consumers as well as of producers," Wong added.
Trump Friday authorized an executive directive removing tariff requirements from multiple food imports—including coffee, beef, and bananas—responding to escalating concerns about surging grocery costs impacting American households.
Under this exemption, Australian beef—ranking among the country's leading export commodities to the US—will escape the previously imposed 10% tariff burden.
Wong further indicated that Australia will "keep advocating our position" on eliminating additional tariffs that remain in effect.
