Brutal M23 Rebel Raid Claims Seventeen Lives in DR Congo

(MENAFN) On Monday, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s armed forces condemned the March 23 Movement (M23) rebel faction for a brutal assault that resulted in the deaths of at least 17 civilians in the country’s unstable eastern zone.

The military revealed in an official release that the violent incident took place Saturday evening in Munzinzi village, situated within Walungu Territory of South Kivu Province.

The statement detailed that around 6:30 p.m. local time, fighters from M23 launched an assault on the village, slaughtering at least 17 non-combatants and igniting homes.

Numerous villagers sought refuge at nearby army outposts to escape the violence, the statement added. Officials suggested the massacre was likely a reprisal following recent battlefield setbacks experienced by the rebel group.

M23 remains one of the most aggressive armed factions in the area, consistently mounting attacks across North and South Kivu provinces. Their ongoing offensives have displaced hundreds of thousands, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian disaster.
