Russia Signals Readiness to Support Iran

(MENAFN) Russia has expressed its readiness to assist Iran in multiple ways amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, contingent on Tehran’s specific requirements, the Kremlin announced Monday.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained during a press briefing, “It all depends on what Iran needs. We have offered our mediation efforts. This is specific. We have stated our position, this is also a very important manifestation, a form of support for the Iranian side.”

The aerial clashes between Israel and Iran have been ongoing since June 13, when Israel launched a surprise offensive against numerous Iranian military and nuclear facilities. Tehran retaliated with missile strikes in response.

Earlier on Sunday, the U.S. targeted three principal Iranian nuclear sites. President Donald Trump claimed the attacks caused “severe damage” and “obliteration” of the facilities.

Regarding recent discussions in Moscow between President Vladimir Putin and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Peskov noted that the meetings provided a platform for exchanging views and allowed Iran to present its proposals and perspective on the current crisis.

Peskov also highlighted the increasing number of parties involved in the conflict, stating, “And of course, we condemn this and express deep regret in this regard.”

He confirmed that Iran’s situation was a frequent topic during talks between Putin and Trump, although Putin was not briefed about Sunday’s U.S. strikes beforehand.

Addressing comments by President Trump about regime change in Iran, Peskov said, “We believe that the fate of the leadership of a country should be decided by the people of that country, but in no way by third countries or the leadership of third countries.”

He added that U.S. attacks on Iran would not impact Moscow-Washington dialogue, describing these developments as “independent processes.”

Peskov raised concerns over the nuclear facilities targeted in the strikes, saying, “It remains to be seen what happened to these nuclear facilities, whether there is a radiation hazard.
Although we have heard a statement from the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) that there are currently no signs of radiation contamination. But these are all questions that, of course, cannot but cause legitimate concern.”
